Peak Hill Track is a short trail to the top of Peak Hill (1240 m) where overlooks Lake Coleridge, Rakaia River and the gorgeous farmland by the mountains and waters. I am not sure the reason that DOC rates this track as an “expert route”, but also describes it “suitable for family groups.” But I would agree that the hike is family-friendly.
I have been there three times via the same track which starts from the southeastern side of the hill, but I did not go beyond the summit to check whether I can find a trail that continues toward northwest. If that route really exists like the topo map shows, you may complete a loop instead of a return trip.
Although a return hike may be done in a half day, it does not necessarily mean it is very easy. From the trail head to the top of Peak Hill, the net altitude gain is around 600 m, not a small climb, and some places along the trail may be slippery from my experience. But I think most of the people with average fitness should be able to reach the summit without much struggle.
I hiked on the trail in June 2016, December 2018 and June 2019. I was rewarded with distinct and amazing scenes each time which were captured into my time-lapse video. Even not far from Christchurch, I only saw a few people on the top during a visit, otherwise the trail was silent. This trail may be a good alternative in winter when other taller mountains are already snowy.
