About Mt. Fyffe, Kaikōura

Mt. Fyffe is situated on a seaward ridge where is between the bigger and taller Seaward Kaikōura Range and the plain / peninsula of Kaikōura. Facing the distinct landscapes on both sides, this mountain is a popular hiking destination near the renowned Kaikōura. Among the trails I have ever been, it is one of the few peaks where overlook the sea in a short distance.
There are more than one routes leading to Mt. Fyffe, but I guess the shortest and the easiest one is to hike from Mt. Fyffe Carpark and follow a well-formed track on its southwestern ridge. You will arrive Mt. Fyffe Hut before the continuing uphill walk to the peak. The altitude gain from the trail head to the 1602 m peak is about 1400 m. Technically it is a very big ascent for a day hike, but the steady climb along the wide track makes the climb feeling not so demanding, at least mentally. In fact, the walk is so straightforward that some people may find it dull.
The scenery along the way is good, but the real prize is the view on the summit. Walking on a hot sunny day may be challenging because there are not many spots that you can stay under the shade.
I have been Mt. Fyffe twice, April and December of 2018. The first trip was a solo day hike, and a few months later my partner and I camped on the top on my second hike. We were not the only campers there unlike most of the cases probably because it was during a holiday. Some nice time-lapse clips and photos were captured smoothly, the most important achievement from the trip.
