About Bealey Spur and Pt 1048
The Difficulty Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (from the track to Pt 1048)
Bealey Spur is a prominent ridge standing beside the broad river valley where Bealey River joins Waimakariri River. Bealey Spur Track starts from the small community, then goes up this ridge until it reaches Bealey Spur Hut.
I had walks on this track twice. First visit was in September 2018, right after I upgraded my time-lapse photography equipment. Although I did not really finish the entire track to the hut, but based on the section I passed, this appeared an easy track suitable for most of people. Click for the track information from DOC.
Not very far from the track, the location at Pt 1048, was my testing ground for those camera gears. It is an amazing spot which has great view over the river valley and SH 73 that runs underneath the mountains toward Arthur’s Pass. There was a big cairn on the mound of Pt 1048. I assumed there might be some visitors in the past and maybe some also camped there like us.
Because this location is considerably away from the track without any sign or trail to follow, I would highly recommend using a navigation device with an offline topo map. If the visibility is good and you know exactly where you are going, the walk to Pt 1048 would be straightforward. Just choose a route to avoid the ponds and swampy area to cross the grass field. But when the visibility is poor, you may need a navigation device to prevent a deviation from the targeted direction.
This is my first testing ground for these motion control devices. Because of a couple of reasons, I rarely used them in recent years. But I have special memory from this place.
