About Liji Badlands

Liji Badlands (利吉惡地) is a special land feature to the northeast of Taitung Train Station, located on the other side of Beinan River (卑南溪). The rough and sheer face of the hills that has plant barely to grow is the result of collision between Philippine tectonic plates and Eurasian tectonic plates plus erosion and weathering throughout the years.

There are two spots where you may approach this geographic feature, one is at the official entrance of Liji Badland Geopark (利吉惡地地質公園) by the highway (東45) but the other one which I recommend is called Fuyuan Grand Canyon (富源大峽谷) (according to Google Map this site is closed at the moment (2026)), where is above the highway, overlooking the badlands from heights.

But you probably need the car navigation to avoid missing the road which diverges from the highway 197 and make all the following turns correctly. When I visited there in 2019 it appeared the facility was not well maintained. The broken stairs and lookout showed that this place was not popular to tourists. Except several visitors on their heavy motorcycles, the site was very quiet. You may need to check if the site is open to the general public in advance.
