About Qijin (Cijin)
Qijin (or Cijin 旗津), a district of Kaohsiung and the natural guard of the Port of Kaohsiung, was a peninsula until 1967 when its southern end, where joined to the land, was removed to become the second harbor of the port. Since then Qijin is an island. Though it is not a big island, Qijin is full of interesting spots where I visited each time in Taiwan.
There are two ways to reach the island, via the undersea cross-harbor tunnel (過港隧道) to Qijin’s southern side or by the ferry from Gushan Ferry Pier Station (鼓山渡輪站) to the touristy northern side.
Both sides of the undersea tunnel are within industrial areas where the navigation can be confusing to strangers. Many of road users there are locals who drive or ride fast, not suitable for tourists who wish a laid-back tour. Please be aware that walking or cycling is not allowed in the tunnel.
Most of the scenic and historic sites of Qijin are on its northern side, but you can bike southward along the coast to explore more local features. Once you reach Qijin 1st Road (旗津一路) the following area is all industrial with heavy and busy operations. The only destination you can visit as the general public is the park outside the control tower of Kaohsiung VTS where faces the Second Harbor.
Navigation to this place is tricky. It took me some effort to pass through the maze-like turns / circles before arriving the car park. Please follow the signs carefully, especially when you ride a scooter, otherwise you may easily enter a restrictive zone, car-only lanes, or miss a turn.
