Dulanshan (都蘭山), the highest mountain in southern Coastal Mountain Range, stands high above the northern shore of Dulan Bay (都蘭灣). It is the sacred mountain of Amis (阿美族) and Puyuma (卑南族) people. Even its elevation of 1190 m is just an ordinary height among the mountains in Taiwan, but when looking it from Jialulan (加路蘭), at the southern side of the bay, everyone would appreciate its majesty like the guardian of the land and sea.
Many yeas ago I stayed in Taitung for a period of time while having my military service. Since the first day I saw this mountain and the bay, I was stunned by the beauty and magnificence. The scenery became my mental relief whenever I had a chance to glance at it during those stressed days.
In the autumn of 2009 my partner and I had a hike to Dulanshan. It was only two months after the hike to Baliwanshan (八里灣山) in northern Coastal Mountain Range. Since the harsh lesson learned from that hike, we were very well-prepared this time with plenty of water, snacks and jelly drink in case of losing appetite due to the hot weather.
The trail to Dulanshan was well-formed and signed. We merely took a half day to complete the return trip, a breeze relative to the experience from Baliwanshan.
