About Lion Cub Hiking Trail (Xiaoshitoushan or Shitoushan), Xindian

The Difficulty Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

Lion Cub Hiking Trail (小獅頭山) is a short and easy trail near a Taipei MRT station, Xindian (新店), that provides fantastic view over almost the entire city.
After leaving the Xindian MRT building, cross the busy Beiyi Road (北宜路) toward the obvious hill (away from Xindian River (新店溪)), start walking uphill on the streets until you find the small trail head beside the entrance of Nengren High School (能仁家商). There are several other trail heads along the streets around the hill but this is the one I went there.

The trail is mainly artificial with concrete or wooden steps and pavilions. Though it is an easy walk but the gradient to the top is not forgiving, a good cardio training. In the highest pavilion, Bitan Bridge, Xindian River, the motorway nearby are under the feet and the panorama extents across half Taipei Basin until Guanyinshan (觀音山) and Datun Mountain (大屯山). The roof of the pavilion protected my gears and I from the elements when shooting time-lapse videos, a great advantage as not many hiking trails offering this convenience.
